QR Code Email Generator Guide: Mobile Handoff & mailto: Encoding

How email QR codes work, how to hand off a temporary email address from your desktop to your phone in one scan, and common mailto: formatting pitfalls.

Typing a random 14-character disposable email address from your desktop monitor onto a smartphone keyboard is slow and error-prone. A QR code eliminates manual typing completely—one camera scan transfers the exact address in under a second.

Using the Built-In QR Code Feature on Email Generator

On Email Generator, every generated address includes an instant QR Code button right next to Copy Address:

  1. Generate or select your temporary email address on your computer.
  2. Click the QR Code button in the generator bar.
  3. Point your iPhone or Android camera at the crisp 200×200 QR modal to copy the exact email address onto your phone's clipboard—ideal when testing mobile iOS/Android app signups while reading incoming verification codes on your desktop screen!

Three Standard Ways to Encode Email Data in QR Codes

If you generate QR codes for printed materials, posters, or event badges, the text payload inside the QR image determines how smartphones respond:

  1. Plain Email Address (`[email protected]`): Displays the raw address so the user can copy and paste it into an app or registration form (used by Email Generator for mobile handoff).
  2. `mailto:` URI (`mailto:[email protected]?subject=RSVP`): Opens the phone's default mail client with recipient and optional URL-encoded subject and body pre-filled.
  3. vCard (`BEGIN:VCARD...`): Prompts the user to save a contact card with name, organization, and email—best for business cards.

Formatting Rules That Prevent Broken Email QR Codes

  • Percent-encode parameters after `?`: Spaces must be %20 (not + in some mail clients) and & inside a subject must be %26, or the mail app truncates everything after the ampersand.
  • Never put a space after `mailto:`: Write mailto:[email protected], never mailto: [email protected].
  • Never prefix an email with `http://`: That turns an email address into a broken web link.
  • Use ASCII Punycode (`xn--`) for internationalized domains: Older camera scanners handle ASCII domains far more reliably than raw Unicode (see Punycode Email Domains Explained).
  • Protect your personal inbox on public posters: Any email printed on a public flyer will eventually be scraped. For short-term events or feedback forms, use a dedicated campaign alias rather than your personal address.
