Plus and Dot Addressing Beyond Gmail: Outlook, iCloud, Proton & Fastmail

Gmail isn't the only provider with sub-addressing—compare exact +tag, dot, and alias rules across Outlook, iCloud Mail, Proton Mail, Fastmail, and Yahoo.

Plus addressing (standardized as SMTP sub-addressing in RFC 5233) lets you append +label before the @ sign so incoming mail lands in your existing inbox with a filterable tag. However, major email providers differ sharply on dots, symbols, and alternative alias features.

Provider Sub-Addressing Comparison

Provider+tag Sub-AddressingDots Ignored?Extra Alias Capability
Gmail (`@gmail.com`)Yes ([email protected])Yes (Gmail only)@googlemail.com equivalence
Outlook / HotmailYes ([email protected])No (dots are distinct)Up to 10 account aliases
Apple iCloud MailYes ([email protected])NoHide My Email random aliases (iCloud+)
Proton MailYes ([email protected])No+, and SimpleLogin pass-through aliases
FastmailYes ([email protected])No[email protected] subdomain addressing & Masked Email
Yahoo MailNo (+ not supported)No[email protected] disposable base keyword in settings

Three Pitfalls of Plus-Tag Aliases

  1. Strict Forms Reject `+`: Despite + being valid in RFC 5322/5233 for decades, poorly written web validation scripts still reject + as an "invalid character."
  2. Zero Privacy From the Recipient: Deleting +tag trivially reveals your underlying personal email address ([email protected] immediately exposes [email protected]).
  3. No Independent Kill Switch: If a spambot strips +tag and emails your base address, blocking the +tag filter no longer stops the spam.

When to Skip Plus Addressing and Use a Disposable Inbox

Use +tag sub-addressing when you *want* receipts or updates inside your permanent mailbox sorted into folders. When you want zero link back to your real email address—such as downloading a gated resource or running QA tests—generate a standalone temporary address on Email Generator instead.
