How to Check Your Domain's MX Records and Mail Routing
Added a DNS MX record and want to verify whether mail routing works? Learn how to inspect live MX records and fix the five most common DNS configuration mistakes.
After adding or updating an MX record at your registrar, verifying live DNS resolution confirms where incoming emails for that domain actually route. You can run an instant live lookup anytime using our Disposable Email Domain Checker—paste either example.com or [email protected] to inspect its active mail servers.
What a Live MX Lookup Reveals
- MX Records Present: Shows the exact mail exchange hostnames and priorities published in DNS.
- No MX Found: Indicates that sending servers have nowhere to deliver mail (or that DNS changes have not propagated yet).
- Disposable Classification: Shows whether the domain matches known public temporary email lists.
Five Common Reasons a New MX Record Isn't Working Yet
- DNS Propagation Delay: While Cloudflare often updates within 1–2 minutes, many registrars cache
NSorMXrecords with a TTL between 30 minutes and 24 hours. - Wrong Host / Name Field: To receive mail at
[email protected], theNameorHostfield must be@(or left blank, depending on the panel). Typingmailin the Host field creates an MX record for[email protected]instead! - Leftover Parked MX Records: Newly registered domains frequently include default registrar "parked mail" MX rows. Leaving two conflicting MX servers active causes intermittent delivery failures—delete old MX records you do not use.
- Root CNAME Conflict: DNS standards (RFC 1912 / RFC 2181) forbid placing a
CNAMErecord at the apex (@) alongside anMXrecord. Use anA/AAAArecord (or Cloudflare CNAME flattening) at the root so yourMXrecord resolves cleanly. - Missing Trailing Dot in Raw Zone Files: Advanced BIND-style zone editors expect a trailing dot on fully qualified targets; otherwise they silently append your own domain twice.
